Pulsation. Repetition. The shape of sound. The shape of light. The everyday reframed as art. The possibilities of chance. In this installment of the Flavin Concert Series, John Cage manipulates the radio dial: "I had a goal, that of erasing all will and the very idea of success”. Philip Glass, performing his music in intimate gallery spaces and lofts in Lower Manhattan in the 1960s, is inspired by geometric sculpture, and shapes his composition accordingly. Steve Reich appropriates the electronic keyboard of rock & roll bands (think The Dave Clark Five, The Doors). “I had the idea that if a group of tones were all pulsing together in a repeating chord….”
The Flavin Concert Series at the Pulitzer is held in collaboration with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. The pieces performed relate directly to the exhibition on view, and are performed by members of the Saint Louis Symphony. Each of the programs are chosen by Music Director David Robertson based on the way they relate to the exhibition concepts and the works of art on view.
