Thomas Struth Photographs in the Lower Gallery
June 24, 2009

The Old Masters exhibition, now extended until October 3rd, will feature photographs by Thomas Struth in the Lower Gallery, which formerly housed the Old Master drawings from the Harvard Art Museum.  The photographs will be on view beginning June 24th, during the Pulitzer's Wednesday open hours.

Thomas Struth (b. 1954) is considered one of the most significant artists using photography today. He came to prominence in his native Germany in the 1970s. With an intent gaze and exacting lens, Struth has expanded his range from early urban landscapes to color portraits, to a series of large-scale photographs staging the interaction between the contemporary world and Western cultural heritage.  In this series, he depicts visitors in some of the world's greatest museums and buildings, including the Musée du Louvre in Paris and the Uffizi in Florence.  Struth’s work is thus an excellent addition to Ideal (Dis-)Placements: Old Masters at the Pulitzer since the exhibition reflects on how contemporary museum displays shape the viewer’s experience.
