Recognizing the Spiritual in Art
September 1, 2004
Overview

This course at University College at Washington University was held in conjunction with the Pulitzer exhibition Exploring Ando's Space: Art and the Spiritual.  It examined the aspiration to the "spiritual," one of the cornerstone experiences of all civilizations. The session leaders provided background information and perspectives on the relationship between spirituality and the arts. A number of compelling questions were explored: What spiritual qualities do we spontaneously recognize in objects and buildings, and what is it that makes us recognize these qualities? Does spirituality have an inherent quality or is it conveyed by context? How do we attribute spiritual qualities to religious works of art from other times and cultures? All sessions were held at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts.

Speakers included: Matthias Waschek, Director, The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts; Mark Weil, E. Desmond Lee Professor for Collaboration in the Arts, and Director, Washington University Sam Fox Arts Center; Michael Gunn, Associate Curator of Oceanic Art, the Saint Louis Art Museum; Terrence Dempsey, S. J., May O'Rourke Jay Endowed Professor of Art History and Religion, and Director, Museum of Contemporary Religious Art, St. Louis University.
