Minimalism and Beyond
October 1, 2005

St. Louis, MO – The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts announces its next installation, Minimalism and Beyond, on view October 15, 2005 through April 26, 2006, with an opening reception the evening of Friday, October 14.

This installation will focus on artists who were working in the 1960s, as well as those of a younger generation who have both redefined and continued the legacy of Minimalism. Works by Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Barnett Newman, Richard Serra, Richard Tuttle and Robert Gober, Roni Horn, Ellsworth Kelly and Rachel Whiteread will be presented.

St. Louis is rich in Minimalist art, thus the installation will draw heavily from local collections. In addition, there will be works on loan from Chicago, Miami, Munich and New York. Minimalism and Beyond will be part of a broader program with the Saint Louis Art Museum, which is presenting Minimalist works from its own and local collections.

The exhibition will also focus on works that are permanently on view at the Pulitzer. Commissioned for the building are Joe, a torqued spiral by Richard Serra located in the courtyard, and Blue Black, a wall sculpture by Ellsworth Kelly, located in the main gallery.
Installations at the Pulitzer not only create juxtapositions between the art works, but also strongly relate to the architecture designed by Tadao Ando, with its ever-changing natural light and contemplative atmosphere. This particular installation is an opportunity to view works of art that share a similar aesthetic as that of the building.

The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts is committed to deepening the understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the visual, performing, and literary arts. The building designed by Tadao Ando is both a laboratory and a meditative space in which to experience these art forms and from which to further their vitality and recognition in society.

The Pulitzer will be closed September 25 through October 13 for purposes of re-installation. The exhibition will open with a reception on Friday October 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Pulitzer is open and free to the public Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information on docent tours, call 314-535-0770; for group visits of 5 or more, call 314-754-1848.
