St. Louis, MO - The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts announces its next exhibition, Portrait/Homage/Embodiment, on view November 3, 2006 - June 30, 2007, and opening with a public reception Friday, November 3 from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.
The key words in the exhibition title -- portrait, homage, and embodiment - refer to approaches modern and contemporary artists have taken in representing individuals or referencing groups of people. In addition to new takes on traditional portraiture where physical likeness is emphasized, artworks on view also explore different ways to convey the presence of an individual. Some works invite a physical experience, where others encourage the viewer to imagine the lives and identities of the portrayed rather than focus on physical features. By going beyond traditional representation, the artists emphasize a personal relationship between the viewer and the work of art.
Works by a wide range of artists will be on view, including Chuck Close, Alberto Giacometti, Roni Horn, Jeff Koons, Jacques Lipchitz, Bruce Nauman, Medardo Rosso, Doris Salcedo, George Segal, Cindy Sherman, and Andy Warhol.
The exhibition does not aim to be a comprehensive presentation of questions related to portraiture in modern and contemporary art. In the context of the Pulitzer building, it attempts to broaden the viewer's awareness of the creative potential this subject matter has to offer. As with all installations at the Pulitzer, Portrait/Homage/Embodiment not only creates juxtapositions between the displayed artworks, but also strongly relates to the Tadao Ando-designed architecture with its ever-changing natural light and contemplative atmosphere.
The Pulitzer aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of art and architecture. With the works of art themselves, along with programs, collaborations and exchanges with other cultural and educational institutions, the Pulitzer is a resource for artists, architects, scholars, students and the general public.
The Pulitzer will be closed October 15th through November 2nd for purposes of re-installation.
The Pulitzer is open and free to the public Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Docent-led tours are available to the public at 2pm on both days.
