Sculpture and Drawings by Richard Serra
March 1, 2003

This installation, which was curated by the artist, was the first exhibition of Serra's sculpture in St. Louis in more than thirty years. Featured was sculpture in a variety of media covering his entire career. Paintstick and charcoal drawings lent by the artist and St. Louis collectors presented important aspects of Serra's drawing achievements. These works complemented Joe, the 13 foot high, 2 inch thick torqued spiral sculpture that was commissioned for the Pulitzer and is permanently installed in the courtyard. A curving, monumental sculpture made from five plates of weatherproof steel, Joe is an integral aspect of the Pulitzer and served as the springboard for this installation. Sculptures by Scott Burton, Bruce Nauman, Doris Salcedo, and Kiki Smith were also on view.
